2024 Workplace Safety Index

The 2024 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index ranks the top causes of serious workplace injuries by their direct cost to U.S. businesses. The Workplace Safety Index is published each year by Liberty Mutual Insurance and gives business leaders the insight they need to identify the causes of costly, common injuries. Notably, the top 5 causes account for about 60% of all workers comp costs in the U.S., and these causes have all been in the top five for that last 6 years.

The report also breaks down the information by industry, so we can see specifically how the construction industry results look.

  1. Falls to lower-level account for 24.6% of all injury costs

  2. Overexertion, outside sources (i.e. lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying) accounts for 17.7% of costs

  3. Falls to the same level and struck-by incidents each account for 12.2% of costs

  4. Other exertions or bodily reactions accounts for 6.8%

This means that falls, overexertion, and struck-by incidents account for 73.5% of all injury costs in the construction industry. That translates to $7.83 billion. You can download the report summary and read more using the link below.
