4D BIM, 5D, BIM Level 3? What Does it all Mean?

Updated: Dec 22, 2022

Building Information Modeling (#BIM) has been a hot topic in construction for quite a while now, but there is still a lack of understanding among many AEC industry professionals about the different terms used to describe the three-dimensional models and information they contain. First, it's important to understand that a Building Information Model is more than just a 3d rendering. It contains information critical to the successful construction of the structure. The level of information contained in the model can be described using the terms 4D, 5D, etc. The level of adoption on a project is described using terms like BIM Level 2, BIM Level 3, etc. These terms describe the level of sharing that will take place among project team members.

This video is from my LinkedIn Learning course called Digital AEC Foundations. This course covers the basics of BIM, virtual design and construction, and other digital resources for the design and construction industry.
